Use of Masks – NHS Patient AGPs

Please note the guidance below in relation to the use of own masks for NHS AGPs:

For practitioners wanting to use their own supply of non-reusable FFP3 masks for AGP treatments on NHS patients:

  • FFP3 masks can be utilised by practices where the practice, as the employer, holds evidence that the masks comply with HSE (Health & Safety Executive) recommendations and that the relevant staff members have been fitted to that mask according to manufacturers’ guidance.
  • That the practice will fund the cost of these masks.
  • That NHS patients are not charged a fee for the use of this PPE.

For practitioners wanting to use their own supply of reusable FFP3 masks for AGP treatments on NHS patients:

  • FFP3 masks can be utilised by practices where the practice, as the employer, holds the evidence that the masks comply with HSE (Health & Safety Executive) recommendations, that the relevant staff members have been fitted to that mask according to manufacturers’ guidance.
  • Practitioners must ensure that reusable FFP3 masks are decontaminated according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • When using reusable FFP3 masks, a system for ensuring the replacement of expired filters, according to manufacturer’s instructions, should be developed and utilised.
  • That the practice will fund the costs associated with the use of these masks.
  • That NHS patients are not charged a fee for the use of this PPE.

Practitioners are advised that this guidance on the use of reusable FFP3 masks is based on current best evidence and could be subject to future change.
