MANAGEMENT OF GYPSUM WASTE
We wrote to you some time ago in relation to the uplift of gypsum waste. Please accept our apologies for the length of time it has taken to get back to you.
We are now in a position to quote from the Consolidated European Waste Catalogue. Section 18 (Wastes from Human and Animal Health Care) of Appendix A, as outlined in the Special Waste Amendment (Scotland) Regulations: 2004 (SSI 2004/112) advises the following:
Section 18 01 03* wastes whose collection and disposal is subject to special requirements in order to prevent infection
Section 18 01 04 wastes whose collection and disposal is not subject to special requirements in order to prevent infection (for example dressings, plaster casts, linen, disposable clothing, diapers)
It is our understanding that your clinical and special waste will continue to be collected under Section 18 01 03. However, given that gypsum waste falls into Section 18 01 04 (plaster casts) and is not classed as either clinical or special waste, it is up to individual practices to have suitable contractual arrangements for the uplift of their own gypsum waste.
I hope this information is helpful.
Yours sincerely,
ALISON McNEILLAGE
Interim General manager – PCCO
